Benefits of Meditation - 10 Minutes a Day Can Change your Life

No I am not a self-help guru and to be clear, I am not being paid to write this. The fact is, I was stressed out and full of anxiety. Stress seems to compound on itself, getting worse and worse well before it makes a turn to get better. I admittedly took to the internet in search of an answer and stumbled on what initially looked like a cult of people that swore by meditation. My initial thought was that I would never have the time to do this. Then I found Headspace, an app that claimed that you only need 10 minutes a day to meditate.


So What is Meditation and Mindfulness Anyways?

The idea of meditation isn’t forgetting every thought you have but rather being mindful of your thoughts and learning to accept them. You basically practice this during meditation. A thought pops up, “have to check my email” or “must make dinner reservations” and you start to practice accepting those thoughts and then letting go of them. As you continue to practice this, you start to develop control over your thoughts and your mind. You slowly begin to deal with stress better and anxiety no longer takes over your life.

Can I Really Meditate on 10 Minutes a Day?

I had the same question. I thought it took 60 minutes but it doesn’t. All you need is 10 minutes and some guidance. The app is perfect for this as it walks you through what to do, what to think about and how to breath, step by step. The idea behind a 10-minute meditation is that we live in a very busy era and between balancing careers, our family, our hobbies and ourselves, it can be difficult to consistently find one hour everyday. It’s much easier to allocate 10 minutes! And it’s also much easier to commit to 10 minutes a day as consistency is key. One strategy is to meditate first thing in the morning when you wake up. That way you can start the day off fresh and relaxed and with a clear mind. It’s also increasingly more difficult to make time to meditate as the day goes on.

Meditation will help with stress and anxiety and is a wonderful tool for anyone with a busy life, mothers, entrepreneurs, grandparents. The list goes on and on. Almost everyone that I know in my life could benefit from this and I cannot recommend it enough.
